Anchorage, AK

Here we are with our young tour guide on a walking tour of Anchorage. She called it the Captain Cook Tour and wore a Captain Cook hat for effect. She is a seasonal employee of the Public Lands Information Center and was very good and informative.

Everyone kept telling us that there were moose in Anchorage and they must have been right. This one showed up behind our motor home which is right near downtown Anchorage. This is a young one but is growing antlers and is pretty big. Everyone gave him plenty of room to do whatever he pleased.

Baseball

We actually went to a doubleheader baseball game on the Fourth of July with fireworks following the games. As you can guess we got back to the motor home about 1 a.m. Anchorage has two college player baseball teams and they played each other. They split their wins. There are six teams in this league and are made up of college players from Alaska and the other 49 states. There were some pretty good players. We learned a lot since the lady on our right was the president of one team and the guy on our left was a city councilman of Anchorage. We were there about 8 hours and the fireworks were great at 12:30 a.m. although it still wasn't dark.

Anchorage is a nice town to visit as you can see above. There are flower beds in the downtown area and there are several murials around town. We may stay a couple of extra days here.

The top picture of the Anchorage skyline was taken from Westchester Lagoon which is in the south part of the city. As you can see it is a modern city. The next two pictures show activities we saw at the Alaska Native Heritage Center. There were native dances with their music and the last picture shows a game which we had never seen before. While balancing on one hand the athlete kicks a ball which is well over his head and I think he said the record was over eight feet. They have competitions for these events.

We saw some animals today with some in a zoo and some on a trail. Can you guess which were in the zoo? It is obvious that the tigers were the ones in the zoo. We were hiking on this rather long coastal trail in Anchorage and as we rounded a curve there was this big moose coming directly toward us. We both stopped and just waited. After a while the moose moved on into the brush and boy were we glad.

Homer, AK

We have many good memories of Homer so I thought that the two pictures above would give you a flavor of that small coastal town. The top picture is Arctic Lupine which is very plentiful in Alaska but it just seems bigger and brighter in Homer. The bottom picture shows some of the many sea birds at the harbor area. There are many different types of birds around Homer.
